இஸ்ரேலிய ராணுவத்தின் மீது அல்-கஸ்ஸாம் படையணி பல புதிய யுக்திகளை கொண்டு தாக்குதல்களை நடாத்தி வருவதை கடந்த சில நாட்களாக காணக்கூடியதாக இருக்கிறது. கடலின் அடியில் சென்று இஸ்ரேலிய படைத்தளம் மீதான தாக்குதலை நடாத்தியமை இஸ்ரேலிய இராணுவம் எதிர்பார்க்காத ஒன்று. அது போல் நேற்றும் ஒரு முயற்ச்சியில் இறங்கியிருந்தது அல்-கஸ்ஸாம் படையணி. சிறிய ரக ட்ரோன் விமானம் போன்ற ஒன்றை இஸ்ரேலின் ராடார் திரையில் கண்ட இராணுவ கட்டுப்பாட்டு மைய உத்தியோகத்தினர், உடனடியாகவே அதனை இராணுத்தின் தலைமையத்திற்கு தெரிவித்தனர்.

Unsolved Brain Mysteries

When you compare the brain's detectives, neuroscientists, to other detectives, the neuroscientists seem to fall short in solving mysteries. After all, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple needed only about 250 pages each to get to the bottom of their cases. Ditto for Nancy Drew. On television, Jessica Fletcher and Kojak were all able to find their answers in an hour or less, while Veronica Mars needed only about the length of a television season. Even the pride of South Florida, Encyclopedia Brown, was able to solve his cases with little more than a casebook, his trusty sneakers and a wide variety of miscellaneous factoids. If Encyclopedia Brown only required 25 cents per day (plus expenses) to solve his cases, then what's taking neuroscientists so long to unravel the mysteries of the brain?

OK, so the brain is a bit more complex than Encyclopedia Brown's nemesis, Bugs Meany. But with the brain only weighing in at 3 pounds (1.4 kg), you could be forgiven for wondering if neuroscientists are just big slackers. As it is, mysteries galore abound in those 3 pounds, and until fairly recently, scientists lacked the equipment to accurately study the brain. With the advent of brain imaging technology, it's possible that they'll continue to learn more.

The workings of the brain, however, determine such fundamental questions about person-hood that we may never know everything about what's going on. That doesn't mean we can't speculate, though. While we may not be able to solve these capers with clues that point to Colonel Mustard in the library with a revolver, we can dive into the current thinking on some of the brain's famous unsolved mysteries. NFC Technology Could Rock Your World

Smartphones are no longer just fancy mobile devices that let you e-mail and surf the Web. A contemporary smartphone has more computing power than all of the computers that were at NASA's disposal back in 1969 when the United States first landed on the moon [source: PC Mag]. Although you probably won't use your phone to control your own lunar lander anytime soon, it will likely do all sorts of other nifty stuff, like replace your wallet, thanks to NFC (near-field communication)technology.

What makes glass transparent?

watch a house being built? Carpenters first erect the basic skeleton of the structure using two-by-four studs. Then they nail sheathing, usually plywood, to the studs to make walls. Most walls include a window opening, which holds a sheet of glass situated within a frame. Windows make a home feel bright, warm and welcoming because they let light enter. But why should a glass window be any more transparent than the wood that surrounds it? After all, both materials are solid, and both keep out rain, snow and wind. Yet wood is opaque and blocks light completely, while glass is transparent and lets sunshine stream through unimpeded.

You may have heard some people -- even some science textbooks -- try to explain this by saying that wood is a true solid and that glass is a highly viscous liquid. They then go on to argue that the atoms in glass are spread farther apart and that these gaps let light squeeze through. They may even point to the windows of centuries-old houses, which often look wavy and unevenly thick, as evidence that the windows have "flowed" over the years like the slow crawl of molasses on a cold day.

Diesel Engine - How it works

While i was browsing i visited a webpage which contains animated pictures of various Engines. Here i share one of them. 


The diesel engine was first patented in 1892 by Rudolph Diesel.

The diesel is similar to the four stroke, but uses a different method to ignite the fuel.

The intake valve opens, and fresh air (containing no fuel), is drawn into the cylinder.

Compression

As the piston rises, the air is compressed, causing its temperature to rise. At the end of the compression stroke, the air is hot enough to ignite fuel.

Near the top of the compression stroke, the fuel injector drives fuel into the cylinder. The fuel immediately ignites upon contact with the hot compressed air.

As the fuel burns, the gas in the cylinder heats and expands, driving the piston.

The exhaust valve opens, and the exhaust is driven out of the cylinder.

The valves are operated by a variety of mechanisms on diesel and four stroke engines. The engine illustrated here features dual overhead camshafts, sometimes abbreviated DOHC. These are usually driven by a chain or cog belt as shown here.

With his first practical engine in 1897, “Diesel proved to the world that his was the most efficient engine ever built.” Diesels are still among the most energy efficient engines available. They are widely used in large trucks, boats, earthmoving machinery, etc.

How memories are stored in the brain



A team of scientists has developed a way to see where and how memories are stored in the brain.

The team, led by Don Arnold and Richard Roberts of USC, engineered microscopic probes that light up synapses in a living neuron in real time by attaching fluorescent markers onto synaptic proteins — all without affecting the neuron’s ability to function.

The fluorescent markers allow scientists to see live excitatory and inhibitory synapses for the first time — and, importantly, how they change as new memories are formed.

The synapses appear as bright spots along dendrites (the branches of a neuron that transmit electrochemical signals).
